Musk Cuts Funding for Internet Archive

“This is really going to impact institutions that we take for granted,” Internet Archive director of archiving and data services Jefferson Bailey told the Standard, “like our museums, our historical societies, our public libraries, our academic libraries — just a lot of people that keep information free and accessible and online.”

The title is a bit misleading. What the article actually says is he cut the federal funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities which is an arm of the government that funds free public information, education, and research. It includes not only places like libraries and research organizations, but unfortunately Internet Archive is one of its recipients as well since it’s a free public digital library. So it’s not exclusively IA being targeted but we should also be concerned for the smaller institutions also under NEH’s umbrella that may not fare as well as IA.
