I was in my 20s when 9/11 happened, but there was no footage because video platforms didn’t exist yet. By the time the 9/11 footage made it online 10 years later, it was only images and audio. I remember being traumatized listening to the 911 calls and never wanted to hear them again and I haven’t. They were too horrific. This year is its 25th anniversary and I’m just watching survivors stories for the 1st time in 25 years. The heroism of the firefighters and regular people was truly amazing

People still had VCRs and recordable VHS tapes and the impact footage seemed like it was looping on the news for days. Lasted long enough for me to get home and record, anyway.
Converting to digital could be a bit of a pain but it was doable with specialized equipment at home or at some of the same types of businesses that would develop photographic film. If you only found still images and audio, you weren’t looking in the right places.
