Just my blog on the Fediverse

I’ve spent the entire day researching my family and traced it to the 1700s between VA and NC, and ain’t found one slave yet. So far, everyone on both my parents’ sides were either Freedmen or rented/owned their homes working as laborers and blacksmiths. All the women were just housewives. Perhaps slavery came for my family earlier, but maybe we need to rethink slavery because I’m starting to think there were alot of Black families were never slaves and living commoner lives like white folk.

  1. First off: two things can be true at the same time. Your family might’ve had freedmen, but there still was a lot of slavery.

Second: you’re drawing conclusions based on one family line. When looking at the total scheme of slavery this says basically nothing. Based on historical research its already known there were freedmen and black folk that weren’t slaves in several time periods. However taking in account the transatlantic slave trade, there are very little black people in the US that do not have slavery in their family line. Historical research means creating a large view of the past and then creating a story that best fits the evidence. So basically you need more (much more) historical evidence to even start making the point to rethink slavery

@https://lemmy.world/u/runwaylights I get that there are many nuances and my instance is very anecdotal, and Black lifestyles were definitely different depending on the area. But in modern day school, very little if anything is taught about Freedman and everyone is just taught that all Black people in the Americas came out of slavery. My point is that most people are only getting part of our story because slavery is emphasized so much. And this wasn’t just my family, it was much of my hometown
